Position for a Professorship of the Faculty of Biological Sciences of Friedrich Schiller University Jena, Germany, in Synthetic Biology of Photosynthetic Organisms

Job description (PDF)

The Faculty of Biological Sciences of Friedrich Schiller University is recruiting a Professor of Synthetic Biology of Photosynthetic Organisms (salary scale W1). It is preferable for a young scientist (postdoctoral stage) working with microalgae such as Chlamydomonas and can be tenured.

The position is tenable from 2019.

We are looking for a highly qualified candidate preferable with experience in the area of photosynthetic microorganisms (microalgae), whose genome sequence is available as well as a molecular tool kit. Such tools shall be the basis to establish a research programme for synthetic biology including bioinformatics modelling approaches. The successful candidate should be interested in the targeted manipulation of cellular processes, involved, for example, in the interplay of microalgae with other organisms, in order to trigger novel interactions, improve the photosynthetic capacity or develop biotechnical applications.

The candidate will have an outstanding doctorate in the field of botany, molecular genetics or a related scientific field and will ideally have developed international research collaborations. Applicants are expected to have started to demonstrate their potential to produce international publications and for quality teaching and supervision of undergraduate and graduate students. Experience in the acquisition of third-party funding would be an asset. The professorship is associated with the DFG funded excellence graduate school JSMC (Jena School for Microbial Communication; www.jsmc.uni-jena.de), the DFG excellence initiative, the Jena Centre for Bioinformatics (www.jcb-jena.de/) and CRC 1127 ChemBioSys. For teaching, the candidate should contribute to the Bachelor ́s and teaching programmes in Biology as well as to the Bachelor Biochemistry/Molecular Biology and introduce a module on synthetic biology in the Master ́s programme Molecular Life Sciences.

Applicants for this position must hold a university degree, be able to teach undergraduate and graduate courses, and have a proven research track record that is normally demonstrated by an outstanding doctoral thesis. The length of their doctoral studies and employment period should not exceed six years in total. The initial appointment will be for four years. After a positive evaluation it will be extended for two more years. Upon successful completion of the final review after six years of employment, the position will be promoted to a professorship paid on salary scale W2.

Friedrich Schiller University Jena is committed to increasing the number of women in research and teaching. Therefore, the University actively encourages qualified female scientists to apply. Applicants with disabilities will be given preference to other candidates with equal qualifications.

Applications in English or German including the usual documents (a curriculum vitae, copies of certificates, documentation of the scientific career including past scientific achievements and future research plans, documentation of teaching activities and evaluations, list of publications including two selected reprints, external funding received) should be submitted electronically as a single PDF document till April 27, 2018 to:
